Darjeeling survived a massive earthquake in 1898 and has since become one of the tea-growing capitals of the world- the tea is grown on hybrid bushes developed on very steep slopes. The Nilgiri Hills are home to the world’s most expensive tea. In 2006, tea from the Nilgiri Hills sold for $600 per kilogram at a Las Vegas auction after stories of it being discovered during a pursuit of criminals spread throughout the news.
