You might be thinking, “Barbeque rub? With loose-leaf tea?” We promise it’s not as crazy as it sounds! Loose-leaf tea is a great way to add extra smokiness and flavor to your meat (and a fun way to make use any extra tea you have lying around)!

Earl Grey Steak Barbecue Rub

This recipe, which you can create using Earl Grey from Dollar Tea Club, is simple and easy to throw together using the following ingredients:

  • 2 tsp of Earl Grey tea leaves 
  • 1 tsp whole black peppercorns
  • 1 tsp dried tarragon
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

Simply grind all of the spices together until they are finely ground; then, add the oil and create a paste to brush onto beef or chicken. Let the meat sit for about 15-30 minutes before you grill to let the flavor marinate prior to grilling your meat to perfection! Green Tea Meat Rub

Don’t have any black tea lying around? This recipe is perfect for all the green tea drinkers out there! It’s also versatile and can be used on steak, pork loin, shrimp, salmon, chicken, or even tofu for those who love a good barbecue but do not eat meat.

All you need are the following:

  • ¼ cup of Sencha Organic green tea leaves
  • ½ tsp of ground cumin
  • ¼ tsp of ground pepper
  • ¾ tsp of kosher or sea salt
  • 2 tsp of brown sugar
  • ½ tsp of chipotle powder
  • Olive oil

Mix your ingredients together using either a food processor or a mortar and pestle (if you have one) until they are finely ground. Brush your meat or tofu with olive oil and massage your food items with your green tea rub! Let the meat sit for 30-60 minutes before grilling as per your usual grilling methods. 2 tbsps of green or black tea
